March 1, 2021

Welcome to the tedi.substack.com weekly newsletter! At the beginning of each week*, this newsletter will touch on any number of entertaining, informative, or (possibly) useful topics.

The highlight for this week is my upcoming FREE webinar for the Teachers of Boundless Borders (more on that below) and the third episode of The 10 Minutes or Less Podcast with Dr. Tedi Villasor wherein we touched on the topic of store exclusive comic book variants.

As we move further into 2021, your comments and feedback will also be of immense help in shaping the direction of the newsletter. Till then, I will be utilizing a free flowing format that will incorporate the aforementioned podcast as well as a combination of book, movie, documentary, or television series recommendations.

Thank you in advance for your time and constructive feedback. Read away!

Any suggestions?

As part of my efforts to release a self-help eBook by the end of August 2021, I was hoping to get the pulse of the public (so to speak) on the topics that they would like me to touch on. The general question is this: If you had an opportunity to talk to a counseling and/or sport psychologist for an hour, what would the session focus on?

The button below will redirect you to the survey.

What is a store exclusive comic book variant? How does it work? (The 10 Minutes or Less Podcast with Dr. Tedi Villasor) [S1|E3]

Recorded on the evening of March 1, 2021, my podcast guest Daryl and I tackle the process behind store exclusive comic book variants, their place among comic book collectors, and the future of collecting these exclusives during the pandemic. Guess we went a little over 10 minutes for this one.

You can find the latest episode of The 10 Minutes of Less Podcast at the top of this newsletter.

Lindol Comics

This past week, Lindol Comics—an indie comic book created in 2017 by Randy Valiente and me—reached another milestone with the arrival of our Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) graded Lindol #5 issues. The moment is of a personal significance as not only did our latest issue meet an international grading criteria, it also meant that our entire catalogue to-date is in the CGC database.

Here is a short video of all six Issue #5 variants and their respective CGC grades.

Interested in owning your own copy of Lindol Comics?

You can head over to ShopeePH or contact me directly.

Thanks again Ar-Em!

Book review: Black Hammer: Visions #1

Title: Transfer Student

Creative Team: Patton Oswalt (Story) and Dean Kotz (Art)

Overview:

From the pages of Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston's Eisner award winning Black Hammer (2016), comes the first of several monthly one-shots that probe further into the Black Hammer characters mythos. In Issue #1, Patton Oswald and Dean Kotz, explore the hardships and challenges endured by Gail Gibbons—a middle-aged woman trapped in the body of the pre-teen heroine known as Golden Gail.

Black Hamer: Visions #1 is largely seen through the lens of graduating seniors Barbara and Eunice. As they look back at their time in school, they are slowly reminded of the life lessons imparted to them by a St. Mark’s Elementary School newcomer, a student by the name of Gail Gibbons.

Review:

I was quickly drawn to the storytelling perspective utilized by Oswald and Kotz (How do the people of Rockwood see/have seen the newest additions to their laidback town?) as the mystery surrounding Rockwood had always intrigued me since I first started reading Black Hammer (2016). In the core book, Rockwood was explored briefly by Lucy Weber, the daughter of Black Hammer I. However, I always felt that there was still a lot more story to tell and held out some hope that series creators Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston would someday revisit Rockwood and shed more light on the mystery that surrounds it.

Black Hammer: Visions #1—billed as a “reimagination” and set chronologically prior to the events of Black Hammer #1 (2016)—will (for the moment) have to satisfy my curiosity.

Black Hammer: Visions #1 was released on February 10, 2021. Check your local comic book stores for its availability.

Movie of the Week (MOTW)

Batman and Harley Quinn (2017)

Despite having familiar names (Kevin Conroy, Loren Lester, and Bruce Timm) that were synonymous with the classic Batman: The Animated Series (1992) and The New Batman Adventures (1997), longtime fans shouldn’t immediate jump to the conclusion that this DC Universe Animated Original Movie would follow a similar beat.

Well, I might as well come out and say it, I found Batman and Harley Quinn (2017) to be entertaining and funny on a number of levels. But the one thing it is not—is for children.

When you watch it, you’ll know why.

Batman and Harley Quinn (2017) is on sale this week on iTunes Philippines. ■
