The Preamble
Sometime last week, I stood on my bed as I turned on my air conditioning for the evening. Then I turned around and decided to do this.
So there I was, leaping—nay, more like driving—my left leg towards the wooden floorboards below. As the ball of my foot (the third and fourth metatarsal area) hit the ground, I knew immediately that I probably did some damage.
Certainly not my finest hour.
This Week
Upon reaching the point wherein I could no longer ignore the intermittent foot pain, I consulted with a friend who is an orthopedic surgeon. An orthopedic examination and X-Ray later, I was very fortunate to have not fractured anything (this time around).
However, it was brought to my attention that walking around in Havaianas flip flops for a majority of the last six months of quarantine hasn’t done any favors to the arch of my feet—a development that also made me more susceptible to injury.
Now I Know, and Knowing is Half the Battle
Being naturally flat footed, the orthopedic surgeon suggested that I occasionally wear shoes or sandals—with arch support—at home in order to strengthen my feet and decrease the likelihood of similar mishaps in the future.
That’s an important safety tip for us all.
