№17: Revisiting the Upper Deck Legendary Signatures Insert Cards from the 1999-2000 UD Legends Basketball Hobby Box

May 3, 2021

Welcome to the tedi.substack.com weekly newsletter! At the beginning of each week*, this newsletter will touch on any number of entertaining, informative, or (possibly) useful topics.

For this week, I decided to do something a little bit different and focus on Sport Card Collecting—specifically, the Legendary Signatures inserts from the 1999-2000 Upper Deck Legends Basketball Series. Check it out in the Hobby Spotlight section below.

As we move further into 2021, your comments and feedback will also be of immense help in shaping the direction of the newsletter.

Thank you in advance for your time and constructive feedback. Read away!

As part of my efforts to release a self-help eBook by the end of August 2021, I was hoping to get the pulse of the public (so to speak) on the topics that they would like me to touch on. The general question is this: If you had an opportunity to talk to a counseling and/or sport psychologist for an hour, what would the session focus on?

The button below will redirect you to the survey.

Welcome to the first ever Hobby Spotlight! Inspired by the writings of the late Zander Hollander (Sportswriter, archivist, and author of the ever informative The Complete Handbook of Pro Basketball), I decided to put my 30 years of basketball knowledge to some use and come up with a short, free flowing, and non-linear/viewpoint narrative on the featured player, team, or some aspect of the hobby.

1999-2000 Upper Deck Legends Basketball Hobby Box

1999-2000 Upper Deck Legendary Signature cards like this one of the Boston Celtics John Havlicek (†) were seeded one in every box (1:24). The entire set consisted of 41 NBA Legends.

Each 1999-2000 Upper Deck Legends Basketball hobby box comes with 24 packs with 5 cards per pack. The base set features 90 cards (1-90) with parallel sets: Commemorative Collection (numbered to 50) and the Commemorative Collection Gold (numbered to 1). The UD Legends Basketball set also comes with 10 possible inserts: History's Heroes (seeded 1:12 packs), Legendary Jerseys (1:288), Legendary Jerseys Gold (numbered to 25), Legendary Jerseys Autographs - Larry Bird (numbered to 33), Legendary Jerseys Autographs - Michael Jordan (numbered to 23), Legendary Signatures (1:24), Legendary Signatures Gold (numbered to 25), NBA Originals (1:12), Players of the Century (1:4), and Recollections (1:24)

But the icing on the cake is that this set comes with one (of twelve) jumbo MJ Final Floor cards. These cards feature a small piece of the Delta Center floor wherein Michael Jordan hit the game winning shot to propel the Chicago Bulls to their 6th NBA Championship.

The focus of this post is on the Legendary Signature inserts. Of the Forty-one featured NBA Legends, Thirty-one of them were named to the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players list in 1996.

Check out this really beautiful card set below.
